Can we add anything to the finished work of the cross?
As you can see above, sanctification means to be made holy and set apart.
I have often said there is nothing a person can do or not do to make themselves any more or less acceptable to God, more or less holy. It’s not about us, rather, it’s all about what He did 2000 years ago.
But this teaching is at odds with some great Bible teachers who have taught that when you get saved, you are only sanctified positionally. Then throughout your life your good works somehow add to your sanctification. And that when a Believer dies, they then enter into heaven fully sanctified.
Charles Ryrie (whom I have great respect for) explains it this way:
“Sanctification is God setting the Believer apart for Himself; positionally at salvation, progressively throughout life, and ultimately when the Believer arrives in His presence in heaven.” — Charles Ryrie
But that makes no sense to me. That puts us directly in the middle of the sanctification process. How can I, a sinner, sanctify myself when there is nothing good in me? Paul couldn’t even sanctify himself!
For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. Rom. 7:18
When Isaiah was caught up to heaven (Isaiah 6) into the presence of the Lord, he immediately realized he was a sinful man in the presence of a perfect and holy God. Atonement/sanctification was necessary.
Then an angel flew to him and touched his lips with a coal from God’s altar, sanctifying him. The angel specifically said your iniquity (sin) is forgiven.
This is consistent with the dispensation of Israel—temporary atonement was necessary for forgiveness of sin. In the post-cross Church Age, Jesus’ blood on Calvary is our permanent atonement.
The point is that to be in the presence of the Lord, you had to be forgiven of your sins.
When we become Believers, our sin is forgiven so that we can be in the presence of God. Actually, at the time of our salvation, God enters us and lives in us.
Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, 2Tim. 1:14
In order for God to live in us, we had to be totally 100% forgiven, totally cleansed. Nothing less would do. And as we saw in last week’s salvation study, once you’re saved, you’re always saved.(1) It’s all about what Jesus did 2000 years ago, not what we do or don’t do today.
All that to say, teaching that it’s up to us to do good works to continue the sanctification process yokes people with a works doctrine…which is Satan's lie that Jesus didn't do enough on the cross, that we have to do something more to continue to be acceptable to God.
But once a Believer is sanctified, he can’t be more or less sanctified by what he does or doesn’t do. Jesus did it all. On the cross Jesus said “It is finished” just before He died. He didn’t say “I am finished,” or “I did most of it, so you take it from here.”
The word in the Greek that we translate “It is finished” is tetelestai. Archeologists have found ancient papyri tax receipts with this word written across them—meaning the tax was “paid in full.”
What Jesus was saying with His last words on the cross was that His redemptive work on the cross was complete. He had been made the perfect sacrifice to pay for sin, "paid in full!" There is nothing else that can be added to what Jesus did.
This final and complete act is seen in so many verses that use forms of sanctify in the past tense. Here are some of many...
To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling… 1Cor. 1:2
For both He who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are all from one Father; Heb. 2:11
Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, 1Cor. 6:11
…we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. Heb. 10:10
…that He might sanctify the people through His own blood [2000 years ago], Heb. 13:12
For by one offering [2000 years ago] He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified. Heb. 10:14
However, this does not mean we are not commanded to sin less. Quite the contrary. We’re commanded to grow up, to mature in Christ and our knowledge of God’s Word.
…we are to grow up in all aspects into Him who is the head, even Christ, Eph. 4:15b
...in your thinking be mature. 1Cor. 14:20b
…attain ….[Biblical] knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, Eph. 4:13b
… we also have as our ambition, … to be pleasing to Him. 2Cor. 5:9
So Believers are to have good works…and our good works are as much as we allow God to use us. We can’t, God can.
We live today stuck in our old sinful container, but our sins are forgiven making it acceptable for the Lord to live in us. When this life is over, or we are Raptured, we’ll discard our old flesh and receive a new, eternal container.
For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2Cor. 5:1
But any concept of self-sanctification is not Biblical. Just as Catholic A-millennial and anti-Jewish doctrines were initially embraced by Luther and others in the early Protestant movements, self-sanctification is just a bad doctrine holdover from the Catholic Church that too many good Bible teachers have yet to let go.
When God saved us, when we were born again, He cleansed us/sanctified us so well that He could immediately come into our lives to live forever.
Nothing we personally can do, or not do, will make us any more or less acceptable, more or less sanctified. It was ALL done at the cross.
