Last weekend, while out of town, I found myself in the hospital with chest pains that resulted in a stent being inserted to deal with a blockage of the LAD vessel that feeds the left ventricle of my heart… commonly referred to as the “Widow-maker.“
This caused me to delay my return home until this Sunday, taking the week off to recover and reflect. Surprise life-events like that one have a tendency to bring your priorities into sharper focus.
Since April of 2020 I’ve admittedly been running at a pretty fast clip. I felt God had put me in a position to distribute a lot of vital information from a Biblical perspective that was being suppressed by our adversary.
Considering lives were literally at stake, I felt fine living on less sleep.
To research and compile our weekly Compass e-News requires me to get up a few hours early and stay up a few hours later, usually six days a week.
This is in addition to my teaching a Bible study on Sunday morning to 20 or 25 “church refugees” for the last nine years.
And of course this is in addition to normal Compass activities like planning our Bible trips and conferences, answering Good Morning Lord! questions, writing books, etc.
Additionally, having been married for almost 48 years and having been blessed with seven grandchildren, I’m well aware of my family responsibilities that take priority over my daily work. Puff puff.
But I’m no different than other people who work tirelessly in ministry. Hey, God’s got us living in the middle of a dispensational change and this epic battle of good and evil. Each of us has different responsibilities. Who cares if we are exhausted now, we have eternity to rest… at least that was my attitude until this past Sunday.
I’ve come to the inescapable conclusion that I’ve been burning the candle at both ends for too long and need to reassess my time priorities—lest I find myself watching all that’s going on from the mezzanine.
Reluctantly I’m taking this week and next week off to think about all this. Being involved in Compass is a great joy and privilege in my life. However, at 74 years old I’m realizing that I’m simply not physically able to keep the same pace.
So please keep Susie and me in your prayers as we try to figure out how to adjust going forward. Thank you for your understanding.
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Phil. 4:6-7
