This graphic shows the seven distinct and individual time periods, referred to as dispensations, that are found in scripture. Notice they never overlap...you can't have born-again Believers from the Church Age living into and suffering in the 7-year Tribulation.
Every year around Christmas I have one or two people who will contact us about December 25 not being the date Jesus was born.
I usually politely explain that it doesn’t really matter when we celebrate His birthday, and it’s certainly wonderful that the entire world pauses on this date each year. That alone is amazing. And my Christmas tree is MY FAMILY’S tradition!
So since we recently looked at the date of Jesus’ death and the interesting ramifications of His being crucified in 33 AD, I thought we'd look at the date of Jesus’ birth. I found some fascinating information that I can now use on those Christmas legalists in the future.
The key to figuring out the date of Jesus’ birthday is Zacharias, the Jewish priest who married Elizabeth, the daughter of another priest. Once we determine when she became pregnant with John the Baptist, scripture gives us enough info to figure out within a few days of when Mary got pregnant.
Our search begins when Zach and Liz (what their close friends probably called them) were in their eighties, or possibly in their 90s. Like Abraham’s wife Sarah 1900 years prior, Elizabeth turned out to be barren.
In the days of Herod, king of Judea, there was a priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah; and he had a wife from the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth. They were both righteous in the sight of God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and requirements of the Lord. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both advanced in years. Luke 1:5-7
Probably encouraged by the Biblical account of Abraham and Sarah having a child late in life, this humble couple never gave up praying for a child. And despite their advanced years, God blessed them.
Now it happened that while he was performing his priestly service before God in the appointed order of his division, according to the custom of the priestly office, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense. And the whole multitude of the people were in prayer outside at the hour of the incense offering. And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing to the right of the altar of incense….the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your petition has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will give him the name John.” Luke 1:8-13
Zach and Liz trusted God was in control and faithfully prayed for some 60-70 years to have children, never giving up hope. That fact alone is amazing! It rivals, or exceeds, the patience of Job!
The angel of the Lord continued:
“And [your son] will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God. “It is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Luke 1:16-17
This angelic message was quite a shocker for Zacharias—both because an angel was suddenly in his presence and because what the angel was telling him was almost unbelievable. Due to his unbelief, the angel took away Zach’s ability to speak.
“And behold, you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when these things take place, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled in their proper time.” Luke 1:20
For our dating-Jesus’-birth purposes, this is where it gets interesting.
When the days of his priestly service were ended, he went back home. After these days Elizabeth his wife became pregnant, and she kept herself in seclusion for five months, saying, “This is the way the Lord has dealt with me in the days when He looked with favor upon me, to take away my disgrace among men.” Luke 1:23-25
Imagine Elizabeth’s surprise when Zach got home and excitedly explained 1) the bad news that he was mute, but 2) the good news that God had blessed them so they could have a child despite their age.
We can learn almost to the day when Zach arrived home— here’s why:
King David had divided the descendants of Levi into 24 divisions to carry out the priestly duties. Each division would serve twice a year. (1Chron. 24:1-31). Their dates of service by the 24 divisions are well documented.(1)
Zach was in the 8th division of Abijah, which served December 12-18 and June 13-19 each year. Zach was determined by lot to serve June 13-19.
The last day of priestly duties that week was Friday, June 19, at sunset. Sunset on Friday started the Sabbath, which meant you couldn’t do any work or walk very far.
So after the angel appeared and Zach finished his Temple duties at 6PM, he couldn’t leave to go home. He would have to stay in Jerusalem and not leave on his homeward journey until Sunday morning, June 21.
Most of the Levitical priests had houses in the Judean Hills south of Hebron. They only had to be in Jerusalem for their duties twice a year for a week and the Feast Days. So in between stints at the Temple they usually stayed home and prayed, farmed, raised kids, etc.
Considering his advanced age it would have taken Zach at least two to three days walking the 25-30 miles to get home. This would put him home on Wednesday, June 23, or Thursday, June 24, 5 BC.
So, being a guy with flowers in hand, if Zach had a romantic interlude with Elizabeth when he got home after sunset on the 23rd, that’s actually June 24. Or if it was after sunset on June 24, then that’s actually June 25. Not to mention, Zach would have been tired that first night (hey, he was in his nineties!) but rested up he could get the ball rolling the next morning. 😎
Either way, there’s a very good chance Elizabeth would have gotten pregnant on June 25, 5 BC.
The Bible ties Elizabeth's pregnancy to Mary’s conception.
Luke says the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary in Nazareth, in Elizabeth's sixth month of pregnancy.
Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?” The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God. And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. Luke 1:34-36
The wording in that verse indicates the timing is at the beginning of the sixth month from Elizabeth’s pregnancy. This means the earliest Mary could have been impregnated would be on December 24-25.
Of course, Believers know life begins at conception, not birth. Once Mary was impregnated, every part of Jesus’ life was present in His God-ordained DNA.
Again, the evening of the 24th at sunset begins December 25. So it’s quite possible, if not probable, that Jesus’ conception was, or his life began, on December 24 (Christmas Eve), or in the evening after sunset (December 25).
Regardless, it’s quite interesting that God's timing was on or around December 25…He can't learn so He certainly knew that date would tie into our Christmas celebration.
But that’s not all….
Nine months later lands exactly on the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles that year, beginning on Sept. 29, 4BC.
The Jewish Feast of Tabernacles (Feasts of Booths) is the only feast day directly associated with Gentile worship and salvation. In the Millennium, it is the only Jewish feast that the non-Jews are directed to celebrate.
Then it will come about that any who are left of all the nations that went against Jerusalem will go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to celebrate the Feast of Booths. … it will be the plague with which the Lord smites the nations who do not go up to celebrate the Feast of Booths. Zach. 14:16, 18.
How about that!
So we’ve learned that since we know the date Elizabeth probably got pregnant, we can also determine the date Mary most likely got pregnant. Therefore, Jesus began His earthly life at conception on or around December 25, 5BC. Makes me smile!
