Verse of the Day — Psalm 119:130

The unfolding of Thy words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

True wisdom comes only through Scripture.

MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY

As Christians, God promises we have access to all the information we need to live our life in a God-glorifying way. All we have to do is read scripture, pray for the Holy Spirit to illuminate scripture and apply scripture in faith, God’s Word. The word “unfolding” literally translates “door opening.” When the Word of God is opened, it floods our heart and mind with the light of wisdom. And even those not experienced in the realities of life (“the simple”) have access to all God’s wisdom.

Throughout the Bible there are verses that link God’s Word with understanding God’s way. So, as Christians, we have no excuse for missing this simple principle.

Thy Word is a lamp to my feet, and a light to my path. —Psalm 119:105

For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of the darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God . . . —2 Corinthians 4:6

QUESTION FOR THE DAY

Dear Compass,

I too am a divorced and remarried woman. Although I don’t suffer the same hardship as the woman who wrote recently, I do have my share of hardship. I have been struggling on and off with my decision to divorce as I knew it was something God didn’t want me to do. I had several people in my church ask me to reconsider my decision to divorce my husband. So I must ask this question so hopefully this guilt will go away.

I was a born-again Christian and my husband wasn’t. He didn’t want to have anything to do with God, and he was continually cheating on me. I did not divorce him because he wasn’t a Christian. I divorced him because of adultery. After the divorce I asked him to move back home to where all our families were so we could start over, but he refused and was comfortable being away from his wife and children. I felt life was hard enough as it was, but impossible to live with a non-Christian who poked fun and derided me for my religious beliefs. I felt I didn’t want to be around a man who would take me away from God. So, was I wrong to divorce him?

ANSWER:

As we have stated in past GMLs, yes, it is always wrong for a Christian to divorce a non-Christian.

And a woman who has an unbelieving husband, and he consents to live with her, she must not send her husband away. —1 Corinthians 7:13

But that is not the issue here. Your divorce is in the past, and it’s time to move on to the future. Instead, you are feeling guilty for something Jesus died for and paid for with his death on the cross. It is not conviction coming from God, but rather accusations from the pit of hell.

Then I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation, and the power, and the kingdom of our God and the authority of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, he who accuses them before our God day and night. —Revelation 12:10)

God can take anyone, at any time, in any situation, and make the rest of their life wonderfully Christ-centered. And that’s what He wants to do with you. You need to stop thinking about the “what ifs” and set your eyes firmly on Jesus and “what He has done.” Then your guilt can be washed away.

Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God. —1 Corinthians 6:11

let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. —Hebrews 10:22

fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, —Hebrews 12:2

whatever is true . . . honorable . . . right . . . pure . . . lovely . . . of good repute . . . worthy of praise . . . let your mind dwell on these things. —Philippians 4:8
