Verse of the Day — Genesis 7:4

I will send rain on the earth forty days and forty nights . . .

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Forty is God’s number for testing.

MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY

God is perfect in every way.

Therefore you are to be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. —Matthew 5:48)

The Bible gives us examples of His perfection. He is:

  • Perfect in work.

    “The Rock! His work is perfect,
    For all His ways are just;
    A God of faithfulness and without injustice,
    Righteous and upright is He.
    —Deuteronomy 32:4
  • Perfect in knowledge.

    For truly my words are not false;
    One who is perfect in knowledge is with you.
    —Job 36:4
  • Perfect in law.

    The law of the LORD is perfect, restoring the soul —Psalm 19:7a
  • Perfect in faith.

    O LORD, You are my God;
    I will exalt You, I will give thanks to Your name;
    For You have worked wonders,
    Plans formed long ago, with perfect faithfulness.
    —Isaiah. 25:1
  • Perfect in patience.

    Yet for this reason I found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those who would believe in Him for eternal life. —1 Timothy 1:16
  • Perfect in love.

    There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love. —1 John 4:18

He is also perfect in number. Every number in the Bible is inspired by God and is used consistently from Genesis through Revelation to carry specific themes. For instance, whenever God’s Word is dealing with testing, God uses the number forty.

the sons of Israel ate the manna for forty years . . .” —Exodus 16:35

. . . Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights. —Exodus 24:18

And He was in the wilderness forty days being tempted by Satan; —Mark 1:13

(Moses) led them out, performing wonders and signs in the land of Egypt and in the Red Sea and in the wilderness for forty years. —Acts 7:36

Other examples: The number eight is the number of new beginnings—eight people on Noah’s ark, the eighth day begins a new week, etc. Seven is used for completeness or perfection—seven days in a week, Israel had 70 years of Babylonian captivity. Six is short of perfection, or the number of man (666).

BTW—An easy way to prove the Book of Mormon is a fraud is to point out that the numbers used in it are not consistent with God’s Word 🙂

QUESTION FOR THE DAY

Dear Compass,

I am from India and am involved in God’s ministry. My question is: Does adultery carry the same punishment of other sins? If not, why? If I went to a house of an unmarried woman and we made a mistake and had sex, but it was her idea, am I guilty? If we had sex again, what would happen? How can we escape from this? If we were both married, would that matter? What if only one of us were married? To resolve this, what compensation is necessary?

ANSWER:

When you say you are involved in “God’s ministry,” we hope you mean Jehovah God and that you trust in His Messiah, Jesus Christ. So assuming you are a baby believer (“And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. —1 Corinthians 3:1), let’s go over a few basics.

Sin is sin. There is not one sin that is any greater than another. There may be worse consequences for a particular sin, but in God’s eyes, sin is sin.

For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. —James 2:10

The reason is that you must be perfect to get to heaven.

After you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen and establish you. —1 Peter 5:10

But you can only be made perfect by trusting in Jesus to pay for your sins, not by what you do.

He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit —Titus 3:5

He washes your sins, if you are a believer, through His death and resurrection.

Whether it’s her idea or your idea to have sex outside of marriage, God holds YOU BOTH accountable.

With her many persuasions she entices him;
With her flattering lips she seduces him. Suddenly he follows her, as an ox goes to slaughter . . .
—Proverbs 7:21-22

If you are a born-again Believer and find yourself in sin, you must repent and turn to Jesus. God does not allow temptation beyond that which you can, through Jesus, escape.

No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it. —1 Corinthians 10:13

All of the above applies to both marriage (adultery—Exodus 20:14) or to single persons (fornication—Acts 15:29). There is no compensation necessary to anyone for the dastardly deed (problems with resulting children excluded)—only repentance before God is necessary as Jesus has already paid the price on the cross.

. . . having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us and which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. —Colossians 2:14
