The church foundation is Jesus, not Peter.
Many in the Catholic church have been taught that this verse means Christ appointed Peter as the first Pope and all subsequent Popes followed Peter’s charge. But a close look supports another translation.
In the Greek, the word Peter is “Petros,” a person, masculine. But the word “rock,” “petra,” is feminine and doesn’t refer to a person but rather to Peter’s declaration one verse earlier that Jesus was the “Christ.” Jesus was saying that the truth Peter had confessed was the foundation upon which Christ would build His church.
Jesus simply made two different statements. “You are Peter” and “Upon this rock (change of gender, indicating a change of subject) I will build My church.” To accept the Catholic Church’s translation, you would have to translate this to basically say, “And I say to you, that you are Mr. Rock, and upon this, the Miss Rock, I will build My church.” Clearly it was upon the deity of Christ, and not sinful Peter, that the church would be founded.
For no man can lay a foundation other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. —1 Corinthians 3:11
Can angels sin? I ask this because Satan was/is an angel who obviously sinned against God. But can the good angels who remain do any wrong?
In the Bible, both the OT and the NT words used for angels mean “messengers.” These messengers DO have choices and will be eventually judged by humans (1 Corinthians 6:3) for their works. Depending on what choices each angel made, we find six categories:
- Unfallen/Serve God
I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His chosen angels, to maintain these principles without bias, doing nothing in a spirit of partiality. —1 Timothy 5:21
- Fallen/Rebelled with Satan/demons
Then He will also say to those on His left, “Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels —Matthew 25:41
Then the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, one saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.” And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released, so that they would kill a third of mankind. —Revelation 9:1-15 And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day —Jude 6
Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. —Ephesians 6:11-12
B. Confined Demons
They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into the abyss. —Luke 8:31
Then the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the key of the bottomless pit was given to him. He opened the bottomless pit, and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. Then out of the smoke came locusts upon the earth, and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power. They were told not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads. And they were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for five months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a man. And in those days men will seek death and will not find it; they will long to die, and death flees from them. The appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads appeared to be crowns like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men. They had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. They had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. They have tails like scorpions, and stings; and in their tails is their power to hurt men for five months. They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon. The first woe is past; behold, two woes are still coming after these things.
2) Permanently Confined
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to pits of darkness, reserved for judgment —2 Peter 2:4
—Revelation 9:1-15
And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day —Jude 6

If your question is, “Today, can an ‘unfallen’ angel still fall?” Scripture is not clear. But it appears not. However, the fallen/demon angels do support Satan daily in opposition to God (Ephesians 6).
