Verse of the Day — Psalm 90:12

Teach us to number our days . . .

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

God already knows when you will die—or be raptured.

MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY

God tells us in 1 Corinthians 9:24 that we should live our life as if we were in a race—a race we are trying to win!

Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win. —1 Corinthians 9:24

Since we don’t know how long we will live, every waking moment should be dedicated to serving God and allowing Him to use us in everything we do—a proactive approach to living, to say the least.

God also warns us not to be cavalier about how long we live.

And He told them a parable, saying, “The land of a rich man was very productive. And he began reasoning to himself, saying, ‘What shall I do, since I have no place to store my crops?’ Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and build larger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods. ‘And I will say to my soul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years to come; take your ease, eat, drink and be merry.”‘

But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your soul is required of you; and now who will own what you have prepared?’ —Luke 12:16-20

We can’t count on doing something tomorrow—hence we should number our days.

(Man’s) days are determined, the number of his months is with Thee, and his limits Thou has set so that he cannot pass. —Job 14:5

Which of you by being anxious can add a single cubit (minute) to his life’s span? — Luke 12:25

The days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them. —Psalm 139:16

Bottom line: God is in control and gives us the privilege to run each day.

QUESTION FOR THE DAY

Dear Compass,

Regarding the GML on “wisdom,” I guess the reason I don’t have any is because it doesn’t say if you are stupid God can give you that much wisdom! I wish I knew all I need to do. But I’m afraid if I got all the wisdom I need, there would be none left! Oh well . . .

ANSWER:

As we said in the study, there is a catch to receiving wisdom from God—you must not doubt that He will give it to you.

But let him ask in faith without doubting. —James 1:6

You seem to have a poor/weak view of God that is affecting your faith and causing you to doubt the promises of God. Do you really think God is lying? No, God loves you very much and wants to use you positively in this life. But you must totally trust Him.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart
And do not lean on your own understanding.
—Proverbs 3:5

Commit your way to the LORD,
Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
—Psalm 37:5

You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD;
He is their help and their shield.
—Psalm 115:11

God says what He means and means what He says.

But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'” —Matthew 4:4

He knows you inside out—your thoughts, needs, fears, failures and sin. Jesus totally understands your specific situation as He has been in your shoes:

We do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are . . . —Hebrews 4:15

The very next verse says,

therefore (because He understands) draw near with confidence to the throne of grace.

And James 4:5 says,

Do you think that the Scripture speaks to no purpose?

They have great purpose. They prove to you that God can do anything, including making you wise. All you do is talk (pray) to God, and He will hear you.

I love the Lord, because He hears my voice and my supplications. Because He has inclined His ear to me, therefore I shall call upon Him as long as I live. —Psalm 116:1-2

Lastly, God says you, personally, are skillfully and wonderfully created.

I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
Wonderful are Your works,
And my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from You,
When I was made in secret,
And skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth
—Psalm 139:14-15

You are certainly not junk! In fact, He made you:

  • In His likeness

Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” —Genesis 1:26
  • For His purposes.

And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. —Romans 8:28
         See also 1 Thessalonians 4:7.
He offers an incredible plan for you.

“For I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. —Jeremiah 29:11

We recommend you do a detailed study on the promises of God. In the meantime, never forget your true worth to God:

Do not be afraid little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom. —Luke 12:32

. . . The Lord be magnified, Who delights in the prosperity of His servant. —Psalm 35:27
