Verse of the Day — John 5:39-40

You search the Scriptures, because you think that in them you have eternal life; (but) you are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life.

Jesus must be in your heart, not just in your head.

The Jewish religious leaders always studied the OT with great diligence. They believed that if one could understand the words of the text, he would be included in the world to come. They considered anyone who didn’t know and understand the OT law to be under a curse.

The Pharisees said, “But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.” —John 7:49

Today is not much different as too many people think Bible study is an end to itself, rather than a function leading to a mature, personal relationship with Christ. But it’s not what you know in your head that counts, but rather faith that trusts Jesus as the Messiah—something these Jewish leaders were unwilling (or unable: “But to this day whenever Moses is read, a veil lies over their heart” —2 Corinthians 3:15) to do.

if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved; —Romans 10:9

But in the future, following the tribulation, things will be different, and the Jewish leaders will receive Jesus’ love in their heart:

I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. —Ezekiel 36:26

Dear Compass,

My husband sometimes doesn’t see clearly the ramifications of his decisions. So where does a woman draw the line between obeying God and being submissive to her husband when they are diametrically opposed?

If your husband is asking you to do something that is clearly sinful (stealing, breaking the law, watching “X” rated movies, etc.), then you should follow God and decline. But if he is asking you to do something that is not sinful but stupid and you have properly exhausted all your appeals (with “respect” —Ephesians 5:33), then you are to submit to your husband’s authority and decision.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife . . . —Ephesians 5:22-23

Notice that the verse doesn’t say to submit only if your husband is correct, or only if you think you should, or only if it makes sense. No, you are to submit, period. It’s God’s commandment. This means many times a wife must step back and allow her husband to fail. This is, of course, difficult to do—especially when you can see so clearly the things he is missing. But even though you may suffer earthly consequences, you are actually submitting to God (“as to the Lord“), and therefore to God’s eternal protections.

It is also possible that, by allowing your husband to fail and praying for him, he may learn valuable lessons or principles through that experience that will prevent even greater failure in the future or to be better used by God.

On judgment day, if you have submitted to God and His Word (including those verses concerning submission to your husband when he makes stupid decisions), we know you will be well rewarded. So keep your eyes on the long-term, not the short-term!

GML reader comment worth sharing!

I have a comment on the recent GML regarding not desiring sex with your spouse. My husband and I experienced the same thing. I wanted to honor him once we were married but I just didn’t have the desire I once had. I began to pray and ask God to light a fire within me for a desire for my husband that was better than before we were married. Every single day I prayed. Sex within marriage was designed by God for an unmatched satisfaction for us and to bring Him glory. He will honor her desire to want to satisfy her husband if she is willing to surrender the situation to him. And to say a prayer every single time the thought pops in her head. Worked for me! 😉
