Verse of the Day — Matthew 26:28

For this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

The life that was on the line the night of the Last Supper was not Jesus’, it was yours.

MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY

When Jesus talked about offering His body and His blood at the Last Supper, He knew that Satan, in all his fury, would be waiting for Him that same night in the Garden of Gethsemane. But it was your life and mine that were really at stake. And Satan had us. Sooner or later, every single one of us, left to ourselves, would have followed him to his eternal destiny in the lake of fire, without hope.

There is none righteous, not even one; . . . Destruction and misery are in their paths . . . —Romans 3:10, 16

When the disciples were told, This is My body, this is My blood, they could not yet understand that Jesus was willingly choosing to exchange His life for theirs and that Satan was going to do everything in his power to prevent it. The struggle that night was so powerful that Jesus Himself said,

my soul is deeply grieved, to the point of death —Matthew 26:38

and

being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground. —Luke 22:44

The critical issue wasn’t that the authorities were coming for Jesus’ life that night:

Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels? —Matthew 26:53

It was that all the forces of hell were coming for your life and mine, and there was only One who could prevent them.

On that night in the Garden, left alone by the disciples, Jesus stood against all the forces of Satan and his legions and set His face resolutely toward the cross. If He had faltered on that night, there would have never been a cross and God could not have “delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” (Colossians 1:13)

Celebrate THAT the next time you take Communion.

QUESTION FOR THE DAY

Dear Compass,

I have a friend who doesn’t believe that demons actually exist. And I’m not sure where to start. Could you tell me where I should look in the Bible to bone up on them?

ANSWER:

You could begin “boning up” with the Scriptures that show they are real, genuine beings, not concepts. They are fallen angels and have:

  • Intelligence.

saying, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!” —Mark 1:24
See also Matthew 8:29 and James 2:19.
  • Emotions.

Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me.” —Luke 8:28
         See also James 2:19.
  • A will.

Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter the swine. And He gave them permission. —Luke 8:32
  • A personality.

And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs. Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me.” For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert. And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion”; for many demons had entered him. —Luke 8:27-30
They have no flesh but are spirits.

For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. —Ephesians 6:12
See also Acts 19:15 and Revelation 9:1-12, 16:13.

Demons are called unclean spirits in Matthew 10:1 and evil spirits in Luke 7:21. They are also called unclean and wicked (Luke 4:33, Ephesians 6:12) so they clearly have an immoral nature.

The main problem is that demons oppose the plan of God. They have rebelled against God and oppose the purposes of God in this world.

Then behold, a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. He said to me, “O Daniel, man of high esteem, understand the words that I am about to tell you and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up trembling. Then he said to me, “Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your words. But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. Now I have come to give you an understanding of what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision pertains to the days yet future.” —Daniel 10:10-14
