We should thank God even when things are tough.
The mark of a true sold-out Christian is a positive response in a negative situation. It’s easy to praise God for wonderful blessings, great fortune, and success. But it’s more difficult to thank God in failure or persecution—unless you really understand that your circumstances were allowed by God for your own good. The Bible says the best way to deal with adversity is to expect a few lumps in life:
Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; —1 Peter 4:12
This way, you can consider it all joy when, not if, you encounter various trials.
Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials —James 1:2
(Comments regarding Dr. Laura)
I am extremely upset and disappointed that you find it necessary to single out Dr. Laura as an example for unforgiveness. After all the media pressure that has been created, blasting her for her intolerance of the homosexual lifestyle and Proctor & Gamble’s pulling their sponsorship of her program under pressure from the homosexuals, I cannot believe that you would fall into that trap. Dr. Laura advocates strong family and moral values and is very open about her Jewish beliefs. We should be thankful that someone like her has such a large audience. You are pointing your hypocritical finger at someone who is decent and God-fearing.
You are so right about Dr. Laura . . . I was listening to her the other day and she was outraged by a caller (identifying herself as a Christian) who said that she had forgiven her brother who had killed her father. Dr. Laura said that she shouldn’t be forgiving and that she was crazy to think that way.
We agree that Dr. Laura gives good advice a lot of the time. The problem is that too often it is in direct opposition to Christian principles as she uses only the Old Testament. She’s missing the best part!
When anyone teaches unforgiveness, it shows they simply are non-Believers and shouldn’t be teaching Christians.
bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. —Colossians 3:13
And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. —Ephesians 4:32
As a non-believer, Dr. Laura is lost and headed for Hades unless she repents and trusts the shed blood of Jesus Christ on Calvary.
And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. —Revelation 20:13
She denies Jesus is the Messiah, and therefore the Bible says she will die with Satan as her only father.
You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in him Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the father of lies. —John 8:44
See also John 3:1-7.
Since she does have such wide audience influence, it is imperative that Christians understand where she’s coming from. The basis of her teaching is Christ-less—therefore each and every comment she makes should be weighed against God’s truth in the Old AND New Testaments.
