Verse of the Day — 2 Timothy 2:15

Be diligent to . . . handle accurately the Word of truth.

Christians have a great responsibility to learn correct doctrine.

Christians are charged with learning Scripture. We are to know our Bibles well enough to be able to accurately answer both Christians and non-Christians in questions of doctrine or application of doctrine.

. . . always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, —1 Peter 3:15

God holds us personally accountable to the doctrinal positions we hold. On Judgment Day we can’t point fingers and say, “my pastor said . . .” or “my denomination believes . . .” or “my Bible teacher said . . .” (or GML) as an excuse for incorrect doctrine. The Bible says it is up to the individual to determine if they are being taught truth.

. . . they received the Word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so. —Acts 17:11

So don’t take everything you hear for granted, regardless of who’s teaching you. Compare what you’re being taught to other Scriptures. Take the time to understand what you believe and why you believe it. God wants you to get it right because you are representing Him!

In all things show yourself to be an example . . . with purity in doctrine,” —Titus 2:7

Dear Compass,

I do not agree with part of your answer to the GML question where you stated, “Satan knows your sin nature as he is your father” (John 8:44). Isn’t that out of context? Jesus was talking about nonbelievers. A few verses later, John 8:47, states,

He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God.

As believers, our Father is God, not Satan.

As uncomfortable as this sounds, your original father was Satan.

And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. —Luke 4:6

“You are of your father the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. —John 8:44a

If you are a Christian, you have been “adopted” by God, and He is therefore your new adopted Father.

so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. —Galatians 4:5

But being adopted doesn’t negate the fact that your original father was Satan. Nor did you discard your sin nature when you became saved.

but I see a different law in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin which is in my members. —Romans 7:23

If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves, and the truth is not in us. —1 John 1:8

This means Christians have two natures from which to choose—bad and good. Satan, totally understanding the bad/sin nature, entices humans every day with 6000 years of practice. Paul, our example of a person we should aspire to emulate in Word and deed, declared he sinned every day.

For the good that I want, I do not do, but I practice the very evil that I do not want. —Romans 7:19

But the Holy Spirit also lives in us and convicts us of our sin.

And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment —John 16:8

He wants us to choose the good/righteous.

No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, that you may be able to endure it. —1 Corinthians 10:13

Answers to questions in GML are intended to be supplementary and in the spirit of Proverbs 11:14, 15:22, and 26:26, which calls for believers to seek counsel from more than one person. Therefore, it is not recommended that any decision be based solely on GML’s answer, but rather it be considered one of several counselors when determining a course of action.
