Verse of the Day — Ephesians 2:3

. . . by nature we are children of wrath . . .

You are sinful not because you sin, but rather because you were born sinful.

When Adam sinned, he corrupted with sin every human who came after him. All inherit sin at birth from their earthly father.

For as in Adam all die . . . —1 Corinthians 15:22

This sin:

  • Blinds us.

in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. —2 Corinthians 4:4
  • Gives us a depraved mind.

And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper —Romans 1:28
  • Separates us from God.

being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart —Ephesians 4:18
  • Defiles our emotions.

For even though they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks, but they became futile in their speculations, and their foolish heart was darkened. —Romans 1:21

Therefore God gave them over in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, so that their bodies would be dishonored among them. —Romans 1:24

For this reason God gave them over to degrading passions; for their women exchanged the natural function for that which is unnatural —Romans 1:26

To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled. —Titus 1:15

  • Puts us at opposition to God.

For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. —Romans 6:20

But if I am doing the very thing I do not want, I am no longer the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. —Romans 7:20

Fortunately, God provided a way out of this sinful mess.

. . . in Christ all shall be made alive. —1 Corinthians 15:22

Dear Compass,

I have been unhappily married for 10 years and have filed for divorce. I have spoken with two pastors, two Christian counselors, a psychologist and a licensed clinical social worker. The counselors seem to all give me what I perceive as “their personal opinion.” One counselor has suggested ways to have a “permissible divorce.”

My husband called me to see him and I did so under the belief that it was the two of us who were meeting. But my soon-to-be ex had scheduled an appointment for mediation. I was lured under false pretenses. I am questioning some of the advice and really need yours.

The counselor is telling me that because my husband earned our income that he is entitled to it, and that if I am filing for divorce, I need to go back to work. I have an 8-year-old son, an only child, and I am a devoted mom. I worked part-time until last year when I gave up my job. My husband wants to invest in his retirement and wants me to work while he retires. He retired when I filed for divorce. Should a financial settlement be based on the courts or is there scripture regarding financial settlements?  Please help me with this. I need guidance and direction.

You are 100% out of God’s will divorcing your husband—for any reason! Despite what your counselor says, there is no “Biblical reason” where divorce is allowed—unless you are Jewish, with a hardened heart, living prior to Jesus’ death on the cross (Example – Matthew 18:8-9). We live in the post-cross “Church Age” where Believers have a new clean heart (Hebrews 10:22) and “can do all things through Christ” (Philippians 4:13). If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; it is better for you to enter life crippled or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be cast into the eternal fire. If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell. —Matthew 18:8-9

but He, having offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, SAT DOWN AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD —Hebrews 10:22

You married for better or worse, so the circumstances of your marriage mean nothing, unless of course, he is abusing you. But even if he is abusing you, you need to just get out of the house, not divorce him. God HATES divorce!

“For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel, “and him who covers his garment with wrong,” says the LORD of hosts. “So take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.” —Malachi 2:16

A wife is bound as long as her husband lives; but if her husband is dead, she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord. —1 Corinthians 7:39

Stop before it’s too late!

You need to immediately:

  • Repent.

  • Drop your divorce petition.
  • Ask your husband for forgiveness.

  • Get under his authority.

For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. —Ephesians 5:23
  • Learn to honor and respect him as the head of your home.

Nevertheless, each individual among you also is to love his own wife even as himself, and the wife must see to it that she respects her husband. —Ephesians 5:33
  • Pray that God will heal and grow your marriage into the only way you’ll be truly happy—making God’s will your each and every desire.

Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth. —Colossians 3:2
But if you are determined to go against your loving Creator and pursue an unbiblical divorce that will devastate you, your husband and your child, get a lawyer.

SPECIAL NOTE ON DIVORCE: Divorce is so rampant in the church today that we arranged for a divorce attorney to speak at one of our Bible conferences. Before this attorney trusted Jesus, he divorced 100% of the people who came to his office seeking a divorce. After becoming a Believer and studying closely the scriptures on marriage and true agape love, he required every couple coming in for a divorce to first view a seminar he developed on God’s agape love before he would divorce them. Approximately 70% of those who came for a divorce and watched the seminar decided against divorce and are still married today! He presented this incredible material at one of our Steeling the Mind Bible Conferences under the title How To Love Your Spouse, Regardless!
