Verse of the Day — Psalm 1:1-3

How blessed is the man
Whose . . . delight is in the law of the LORD,
And in His law he meditates day and night.
He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water . . .
And in whatever he does, he prospers.

Spiritual nourishment can result in great blessings.

It’s important to have continuous nourishment, both physically AND spiritually. As part of our desire to mature in Christ, and to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading, God’s Word should be a major part of our life. And if we’re only reading the Bible on Sundays, it would be like eating only once a week. Rather we are to “. . . examine the Scriptures daily,” (Acts 17:11).

Scriptural nourishment helps us to be more sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading when we deal with the most basic to the most complex problems of life:

. . . solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. —Hebrews 5:14

Otherwise we stay spiritual babies (1 Corinthians 3:1-3, Hebrews 5:12-13) instead of maturing, growing up in Him.

And I, brethren, could not speak to you as to spiritual men, but as to men of flesh, as to infants in Christ. I gave you milk to drink, not solid food; for you were not yet able to receive it. Indeed, even now you are not yet able, for you are still fleshly. For since there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not fleshly, and are you not walking like mere men? —1 Corinthians 3:1-3

For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil. —Hebrews 5:12-13

. . . we are to grow up in all aspects into Him . . . —Ephesians 4:15

Dear Compass,

If I understand your teaching on divorce correctly, I would be currently living in adultery. My wife and I both are divorced and fully believe God brought us together. We feel we have had a very fruitful, blessed marriage. Are you saying we are supposed to get another divorce? And who gets the children?

Sorry. Please forgive us. We have a tendency to assume that everyone has read all our past GML Bible studies, questions, and answers. We had several ask this question. To reiterate some points made in previous studies, God doesn’t hold the past sins of those saved by faith against them. All of your sins—past, present, and future—were nailed to the cross in 33 AD (caps below added for emphasis):

. . . having forgiven us all our transgressions, having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and HE HAS TAKEN IT OUT OF THE WAY, HAVING NAILED IT TO THE CROSS. —Colossians 2:13-14

As far as the east is from the west,
So far has He REMOVED our transgressions from us.
—Psalm 103:12

From your point of trusting Jesus to pay for your sins, you are forever “cleansed” and God does not hold you accountable for sin. It was paid for on the cross. You are free to claim, arguably, the most underemphasized and underutilized verse in the Bible:

. . . forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead . . . —Philippians 3:13
