God chose to save you; choose to serve Him in a manner worthy of His calling.
When our earthly days are over and we stand before the righteous God of the universe, we will each be judged as to how we allowed Him to work through us. We will be rewarded for those things that were worthy of reward and suffer loss for those that were not.
If any man’s work which he has built on [Christ’s foundation] remains, he will receive a reward. If any man’s work burns up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved . . . —1 Corinthians 3:14-15
To walk worthily, you must walk scripturally. To walk scripturally, you must know Scripture. Thank you, Lord, for providing and preserving Your Word for us to learn and employ! Hopefully, on Judgment Day we’ll hear those incredible words, “Well done.”
His master said to him, “Well done, good and faithful slave. You were faithful with a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.” —Matthew 25:23
I have a friend who has gotten involved with a group that believes that the government is evil (which I kind of agree with) and they are using Biblical law to justify trying to “remove” their U.S. citizenship. They don’t believe in paying taxes, having car insurance, or purchasing license plates. They will not work unless they are paid daily (based on some Old Testament passage). And when they do work, they demand to be paid in cash, presumably so they don’t have to pay taxes on the income. They believe they are doing what God wants them to do. They say that I am bowing down to the government and not God. Am I?
Hardly. That’s got to be the dumbest thing we’ve heard this year. The governments of the New Testament were far worse than what we live under today; yet Jesus confirmed that we are to pay government taxes which were over and above the 23 1/3 percent per year tithe/Temple taxes:
. . . Is it lawful to give to give a poll-tax to Caesar, or not? . . . [Jesus] said to them, “Then render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s . . .” —Matthew 22:17-20
Paul reiterated the same:
. . . be subject to rulers, to authorities, to be obedient . . . —Titus 3:1
License plates usually are taxes so that those who use the roads, pay for the roads. And “no insurance”?? That’s just plain dumb. This is simply another reason why it is critical to understand and study Scripture from a Dispensational viewpoint. For example:
- The Old Testament says to put to death false prophets.
But that prophet or that dreamer of dreams shall be put to death, because he has counseled rebellion against the LORD your God who brought you from the land of Egypt and redeemed you from the house of slavery, to seduce you from the way in which the LORD your God commanded you to walk. So you shall purge the evil from among you. —Deuteronomy 13:5
But the prophet who speaks a word presumptuously in My name which I have not commanded him to speak, or which he speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall die. —Deuteronomy 18:20
- Stone to death rebellious children.
If any man has a stubborn and rebellious son who will not obey his father or his mother, and when they chastise him, he will not even listen to them, then his father and mother shall seize him, and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gateway of his hometown. They shall say to the elders of his city, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey us, he is a glutton and a drunkard.” Then all the men of his city shall stone him to death; so you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all Israel will hear of it and fear. —Deuteronomy 21:18-21
- Kill adulterous men and women.
If a man is found lying with a married woman, then both of them shall die, the man who lay with the woman, and the woman; thus you shall purge the evil from Israel. —Deuteronomy 22:22
. . . bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God . . . —Ephesians 3:9
God never changes. But He does deal differently with the world at different times. There was a time on this earth when there was no sin. That would be different than today. Times were also different before the Flood—for instance, there were no rain storms.
And today, in this dispensation or time period in which we live, the Holy Spirit, God Himself, can live IN us. Prior to the Cross, God the Holy Spirit did not dwell “in” believers. These are all examples of God dealing differently during different periods of time.
And (to prevent an avalanche of e-mail), EVERYONE, IN EVERY DISPENSATION, is saved by faith in the Messiah’s substitutionary death. Interpretation of the Bible through dispensational doctrines does not imply any change in the character or immutable qualities of God, His moral standard, or His plan of salvation.
Being a dispensationalist means you take a literal view of Scripture—within grammatical and historical context. This literal view includes eschatology or prophecy. For example, a dispensational Believer looks for a literal 1000-year reign of Christ on earth because Revelation 20 says six times that He will reign. And all past prophecy fulfillment was literal.
Dispensations are simply rules you live under during the time of history during which you live. But these rules are not ways of salvation. There is only one way of salvation, and that is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.
