Verse of the Day — Psalm 77:11

Surely I will remember Thy wonders of old.

History IS important.

Schools today are openly downplaying the importance of history. But God wants us to remember the past so we don’t make the same mistakes again and again. The often-repeated phrase “History repeats itself” originally came from Ecclesiastes 1:9:

That which has been is that which will be, and that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun.

By looking back, we make better decisions for the future.

. . . As for the former events, declare what they were, that we may consider them and know their outcome. —Isaiah 41:22

And, of course, without history, how would we “tell of all Thy wonders”?

I will give thanks to the LORD with all my heart;
I will tell of all Your wonders.
—Psalm 9:1

Dear Compass,

In a previous GML, you explained what a cult is. I know a family that belongs to exactly what you describe is a cult. They are definitely religious, but not true to Scripture. I have tried to speak the truth using the Bible to point out their error, but they just twist God’s Word. I am in desperate need of direction as I fear these family members may die without true salvation.

We commend your boldness in witnessing. Unfortunately, since “fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs 1:7), it may be a while before any fruit is seen from God’s efforts through you. Realize what you are dealing with:

. . . the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the gospel . . . —2 Corinthians 4:4

. . . our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against . . . spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. —Ephesians 6:12

If you believe God has laid this family on your heart, and it sounds like He may have, then you should take a long-term approach to your continued witnessing to them.

Rather than looking for opportunities to tell them they are wrong, look for ways to love and help them. Allow for God to work through you and be seen in everything you do. Pray for them daily, or more often. Always be ready with a smile to help in any way you can.

Then wait for God, if it be His will, to open a door of opportunity (Colossians 4:3) to explain why you love them. Remember, they are in the same condition you were in before you were saved.

praying at the same time for us as well, that God will open up to us a door for the word, so that we may speak forth the mystery of Christ, for which I have also been imprisoned —Colossians 4:3

Answers to questions in GML are intended to be supplementary and in the spirit of Proverbs 11:14, 15:22, and 26:26, which calls for believers to seek counsel from more than one person. Therefore, it is not recommended that any decision be based solely on GML’s answer, but rather it be considered one of several counselors when determining a course of action.
