Verse of the Day — Psalm 11:5

The Lord tests the righteous and the wicked . . .

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Expect to be tested in your faith.

MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY

The word “tests” in the Hebrew is the same word used to describe the activity of the smith in the process of purifying gold or silver (Jeremiah 6:27-30; 9:7; Psalm 7:9). This verse is even more pointed when considered with a similar verse in Proverbs:

The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests the hearts. —Proverbs 17:3

“Hearts” refers to spiritual testing, not physical. God is constantly working in our lives (Hebrews 13:20-21), helping build a solid biblical foundation on which we can grow and mature.

. . . knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. —James 1:3

He promises that He will continue to do so throughout our whole lives.

. . . He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. —Philippians 1:6

So expect to be tested until you die or are raptured!

QUESTION FOR THE DAY

Dear Compass,

Regarding the question of the husband’s taking responsibility for his wife—what about the father of grown children who have gone astray? Is he held responsible for them if he chooses to do nothing about their behavior?

ANSWER:

A father is held responsible to teach his children truth when they’re young (“Discipline your son while there is hope” —Proverbs 19:18) and are at home so that when they grow up they will be believers.

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger; but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. —Ephesians 6:4
     See also Proverbs 22:6; Psalm 78:5, 144:12.

The members of the local church are to evaluate the children of a prospective elder or deacon as one of his true qualifications to the position. Therefore, his children are a living testimony of what kind of father/husband/leader he will be.

. . . appoint elders in every city as I directed you, namely, if any may be above reproach, the husband of one wife, having children who believe, not accused of dissipation or rebellion, —Titus 1:5-6

Let deacons be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households. —1 Timothy 3:12

A righteous man who walks in his integrity—how blessed are his sons after him. —Proverbs 20:7

When children grow up, they are to depart from under the authority of their parents.

For this reason a man shall leave his father and his mother, and be joined to his wife; and they shall become one flesh. —Genesis 2:24

Other than observing them for elder/deacon qualifications, parents are not held responsible for their actions, although children may still embarrass them.

A wise son makes a father glad, but a foolish son is a grief to his mother —Proverbs 10:1

QUESTION

Dear Compass,

We really enjoy your scriptural study, but at times, when I’d love to forward it to friends or family, I find the attached Q & A totally unrelated and of a nature/discussion that would be too much for an immature Christian to take in (i.e., the statutory rape question). Can they be separated out via cut and paste?

ANSWER

The whole reason for the “in its entirety” was to include the “how to subscribe” information at the bottom. Therefore, as a new policy, please feel free to forward the Bible Study, the Q & A, or both, as long as the “fine print” at the bottom is attached.
