Verse of the Day — Matthew 10:16

. . . be shrewd as serpents and innocent as doves.

Be responsible!

In the parable of the “Unrighteous Steward,” (Luke 16:1-9) Jesus points out that non-Christians many times act more shrewdly than Christians. Loosely translated, that means Christians sometimes act awfully dumb in business and could learn a lesson or two from those non-Christians around us.

A more specific application for Christians would be that we should invest our time and money for eternal rewards as ingeniously as many non-Christians do for earthly rewards.

. . . the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light. —Luke 16:8

Dear Compass,

You stated that one could not condemn another for birth control but some birth control is actually abortion. So, what exactly do you mean when you say “birth control”?

You have a good question. Obviously, we are not claiming abortion is ok for birth control. We believe anything that prevents the egg and sperm from uniting (fertilization) could be classified as a “weaker brother,” who is simply refusing God’s will in their life. This would include the “rhythm” method and use of prophylactics.

And yes, many forms of birth control are abortive. For instance, the Pill, although it’s intended to keep the egg and sperm apart, many times allows them to unite. However, because the Pill causes a change in the lining of the uterus, the baby cannot attach itself to the uterus and receive the nourishment needed to grow. This results in the baby being expelled during menstruation.

This process is referred to as a “chemical abortion” and that’s why the Pill is referred to as an “abortificant.” Unfortunately, this happens often to unsuspecting Christians who would be horrified if they knew the truth.

There are many forms of abortive birth control, such as the IUD. But not all birth control pills work the same way. We would encourage any Christian using, or considering using, the Pill to do extensive research.

Use several sources for your research. Don’t take just one opinion, especially if it’s your doctor, even if he/she claims to be a believer (many times they don’t have the latest reports). Most crisis pregnancy centers also have specific information available on most birth control pills.
