Verse of the Day — 1 John 4:19

We love, because He first loved us.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

God loved you before you loved Him.

MINI BIBLE STUDY FOR THE DAY

It is quite a mind exercise to think through the fact that God knew you BEFORE the world was created:

Just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world . . . —Ephesians 1:4

That means He knew your parents would marry, and their parents would marry, etc., through all of time. Nothing is left to chance.

. . . and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified. —Romans 8:30

What an incredible God we serve!

QUESTION FOR THE DAY

Dear Compass,

(Regarding “saved by grace, not by works”)

What about the verse in the Bible that says “the wages of sin are death”? Are you saying a believer could continually sin, and die in sin, and still be with Jesus for eternity?

ANSWER:

Yes. First, you’re only quoting the first half of the above verse. Romans 6:23 continues on to say,

. . . BUT the FREE gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Jesus paid for those “wages of sin” on the cross—all of them—past, present and future.

Second, if you say a believer would go to hell for sinning, then you’re also saying a believer must NOT sin in order to go to heaven—therefore, he is being saved by what he does, not what Jesus did on the cross! And the Bible is clear: “NOT BY WORKS”!

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. —Ephesians 2:8-9

He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy . . . —Titus 3:5

Interestingly, your question about “total grace” was asked in the early church and Paul responded:

What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace might increase? May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it? —Romans 6:1-2
