Verse of the Day — Leviticus 16:15-16

[Aaron the High Priest] . . . shall slaughter the goat of the sin offering which is for the people, and bring its blood inside the veil . . . and sprinkle it on the mercy seat . . . and he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the impurities of the sons of Israel, and because of their transgressions, in regard to all their sins

God’s righteousness demands punishment for sin.

On the Day of Atonement each year the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies in the Tabernacle (or later in the Temple) and sprinkle blood on the “mercy seat” (over the Ark of the Covenant—Exodus 25:17-22) to TEMPORARILY cover the sins of the people of the nation of Israel.

This was the only way to meet the Lord’s righteous demand that sin had to be punished—which was a popular theme in the Old Testament. There are over 500 references to God’s wrath in the Old Testament using over twenty Hebrew words. God WILL exercise His wrath in judgment against sinful man.

Thank God for Jesus. He made a PERMANENT sacrifice, called a “propitiation,” for our faith. To God it was satisfaction for all our deadly sins.

He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; —1 John 2:2

Being justified as a gift by His grace through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus; whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. —Romans 3:24-25

Dear Compass,

What is your position on the “once saved always saved” concept? Is it possible to lose your salvation?

Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? —Galatians 3:3

Dear Compass,

I have a friend who claims to be a Christian who says that marijuana falls under the verse I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth . . . it shall be food for you; (Genesis 1:29). He says you can’t condemn using it. What do you think?

We think what he’s been smoking is affecting his decision making. Consider this verse:

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be mastered by anything. —1 Corinthians 6:12

Although marijuana is claimed to not be physically addictive, it is hugely addictive psychologically. Marijuana affects people differently, but in every case, you’re not yourself when you smoke it. It is “mastering” you, which could be reasoned that Satan is in control, not God.

So other than using it to legally ease the effects of chemotherapy, glaucoma, etc., anyone with two brain cells should avoid marijuana like the plague.
