Verse of the Day — Jude 1:14

Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied, saying, “Behold, the Lord came with many thousands of His holy ones . . .”

Enoch got it right.

Written pre-flood, this is the oldest recorded prophecy of the second coming of Jesus. Interestingly, Jude quotes Enoch, but not from the Old Testament. Rather, he quotes from “The Ethiopic Book of Enoch” (1:9), which is the oldest of the known ancient, non-scriptural, Jewish writings. Although not a part of Scripture, it was well respected by both the Jews and the early Christians.

The New Testament gives credibility to other noncanonical writers’ statements.

  • Acts 17:28 quotes Cleanthes and Aratus (Phaenomena 5).
  • 1 Corinthians 15:33 quotes Menander (Thais 218).
  • Titus 1:12 quotes Epimenides (De oraculis).
It doesn’t mean that everything they wrote was scriptural, just that the particular quote was truthful.

Enoch prophesied the glorious return of Christ to the earth with thousands upon thousands of His angels. In the Second Coming Jesus does not come FOR believers, instead they come WITH Him.

. . . the coming of our Lord Jesus with all His saints. —1 Thessalonians 3:13

Dear Compass,

I attend (a large denominational) church, and they believe we are currently living in the millennium. Their teaching regarding salvation seems to be accurate—”born again” forever, etc. But our pastor has taught that there will be no tribulation, just the Second Coming. Could you give me something specific in Scripture that shows that the millennium is future?

  1. The Bible says that the millennium will last 1000 years.

    Then I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was given to them And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded because of their testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the mark on their forehead and on their hand; and they came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

    Blessed and holy is the one who has a part in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand years. —Revelation 20:4,6

    It’s been some 1980 years since Jesus’ death on the cross.

  2. The average age of people in the millennium will be over 100 years, and no infants will die.

    No longer will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days,
    Or an old man who does not live out his days;
    For the youth will die at the age of one hundred
    And the one who does not reach the age of one hundred
    Will be thought accursed.
    —Isaiah 65:20
  3. There will be no war in the millennium.

    And He will judge between the nations,
    And will render decisions for many peoples;
    And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks.
    Nation will not lift up sword against nation,
    And never again will they learn war.
    —Isaiah 2:4
  4. There will be no carnivorous instincts of animals.

    And the wolf will dwell with the lamb,
    And the leopard will lie down with the young goat,
    And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
    And a little boy will lead them.
    —Isaiah 11:6

    “The wolf and the lamb will graze together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox; and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will do no evil or harm in all My holy mountain,” says the LORD. —Isaiah 65:25

  5. Children will play with poisonous snakes and not be bitten:

    The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra,
    And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den.
    —Isaiah 11:8

    They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea. —Isaiah 11:9

To conclude that we are currently living in the millennium, one must not take the Bible literally. That means sinful man must interpret Scripture from his limited understanding. On the other hand, for us, the millennium in the future is a no-brainer. This is because we are fully convinced that the Bible should be taken literally, in context, and within dispensational constraints.
