Verse of the Day — Genesis 3:14-15

And the Lord said to the serpent . . . I will put enmity between you and the woman, between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, and you shall bruise Him on the heel.

The first prophecy of the Bible comes in Genesis 3.

This verse is known as the “protevangelium,” meaning it’s the first mention of the gospel. It’s comforting to know that the first verse following the description of the Fall of man explains how God would solve this new sin problem that had separated mankind from God.

The wording from the direct word-for-word translation of this verse is a bit awkward. It could be paraphrased to read:

I will put hostility between Satan and Eve, between the wicked world and My future Messiah; Satan will bruise My Messiah on the cross, but My Messiah will crush Satan in the end.

And, as prophesied, Christ suffered on the cross but rose from the dead—victorious over sin, hell and Satan.

Dear Compass,

Do you believe in women pastors?

We believe there are many gifted women teachers, but the Bible gives specific parameters as to how those gifts are exercised. Paul said:

But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet. For it was Adam who was first created, and then Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression. —1 Timothy 2:12-14

Scripture outlines specific roles for men and women, both in the family and in the church. Because truth and doctrine are so important to the church, it is imperative that the elders guard against Satan’s pernicious and unrelenting attempts to deceive. God has placed this responsibility on men:

An overseer, then, must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, prudent, respectable, hospitable, able to teach . . . —1 Timothy 3:2

Therefore women who teach should always be under the authority and doctrinal supervision of the elders. And a woman cannot be a pastor unless she is an Elder. And a woman can’t be an Elder unless she is “the husband of one wife.” And if she is the husband of one wife, she has bigger problems!

A message from a GML subscriber regarding waiting on God to answer a prayer for a spouse’s salvation

My wife and I were both New Agers, married for 20 plus years. During these years, I was a college professor, teaching courses in Comparative Religion. Our thoughts, and my teaching, were that all religious roads lead to God.

Then my wife went off one weekend to a retreat called “Save Money on your Food Bill.” That it was a ladies’ Christian retreat wasn’t important. Shockingly, she came back a committed, born-again Christian.

To me that was just crazy and began an argument that lasted for 5 long years… mostly by me saying, “You can not know that.”

But she did know. She was positive that heaven was real and that Christ was the way, the only way. Then to make matters worse, she made me head of the house. I didn’t even want to be head of the house.

After 5 years she stopped arguing with me, saying she could not argue me into the Kingdom of Heaven.

All I had, then, was her example. I came to desperately want what she had—a changed life. She knew Christ.

I wanted the Truth that had lovingly changed her life. After watching her example closely as a Born Again Believer for 7 years, I finally gave my life to Christ.

Praise God, I’m sure you’re saying, and you are right! The fact that God would save a pompous, know-it-all sinner like me is proof He can save anyone.

So…whoever is reading this…whoever you are, wherever you are, if you are living openly and truly as a Born Again Christian, people are watching you. People like your spouse, especially non-Christian spouses, are watching. And actions speak more loudly than words!
